Ordering Regalia (Cap and Gown)

Regalia is required to participate in Commencement.  The cap, tassel, and stole (stole applies only to undergraduates) are yours to keep. The gown and hood (hood applies only to graduate students), are rentals and must be returned.

Doctoral students must order hood and regalia.

The deadline to order regalia is Friday, April 2. You may order from the University Bookstore or online from Herff Jones directly. Options are to pick up at the University Bookstore or ship to home. Regalia shipped to home will have a prepaid return label, and should not be returned to the University Bookstore.

Where do I return my regalia?

Regalia shipped to home will have a prepaid return label, and should not be returned to the University Bookstore. Gowns picked up at University Bookstore can be returned at Saluki Stadium or University Bookstore after the commencement ceremony.

Undergraduates must return the gown. Graduate students must return the gown and hood. The cap, tassel, and stole (undergraduates only) are yours to keep.

Stoles

Students are welcome to wear honor, organization or other affiliation stoles, however, SIU stoles and cords should be displayed above all others.

Caps and Tassel Colors

All candidates participating in the commencement ceremony wear a tassel on their mortarboard cap; the cap should be worn at all times, except during the National Anthem. The cap should be worn horizontal with the point directly in the center front and the tassel on the right for undergraduates, and on the left for graduate candidates. No decorative materials may be worn on the gown or the cap. The Chancellor will indicate to the graduates when it is time to turn the tassel.

The color of the tassel indicates the college/school of the University granting the degree. The proper tassel colors are as follows:

  •     Agriculture – Maize
  •     Applied Sciences and Arts – Orange
  •     Business – Drab
  •     Education and Human Services – Light Blue
  •     Engineering – Orange
  •     Liberal Arts – White
  •     Mass Communication and Media Arts – Alice Blue
  •     Science – Gold
  •     Social Work – Citron Yellow
  •     Master’s – Black
  •     PhD – Gold
  •     Juris Doctorate – Purple
