Name Usage

Commencement Program

Names in the Commencement program are pulled from the "Diploma Name" field in Banner. This field is automatically populated with the student’s legal name. To ensure inclusion of the correct name in the Commencement program, please submit requests for changes at least 6 weeks prior to Commencement. Questions about Commencement programs and names can be directed to events@siu.edu.

Confidentiality

Students who are marked "Confidential" in Banner will NOT be included in the Commencement program without their express written (email) permission. University Events and Protocol will email confidential students approximately 8 weeks before graduation, to notify them of the policy. Action is only required if a confidential student does want their name printed in the Commencement program.

Diplomas

Except doctoral students, graduates do not receive their diploma at Commencement. Diplomas are mailed after grades have been finalized, degree requirements verified, and all obligations to the university have been met. The name printed on the diploma is the legal name. Graduates who wish to use their preferred name on the diploma can email graduation@siu.edu. Please include Dawg Tag number and how the name should appear. Please note only the first name can be altered. The last name must be the student’s legal last name. International students must use the name printed on their Visa information. Additional information about name changes may be found at the Registrar's web site.

Readers Cards

During the Commencement ceremony, each student presents a card with their name on it, which is read when they cross the stage. Cards are pre-printed using legal names, with space underneath for students to include an alternate name or phonetic spelling. Blank readers cards are also available for students who forget theirs or wish to completely update their name and information. Names are only read for students in attendance at the ceremony, who present their card to the reader.
