Faculty Info

University ceremonies are celebrations in the life of the institution. Faculty have an important role in these ceremonies, and we appreciate your participation. The participation of faculty and staff emphasize the value and importance of the guidance, leadership, and support given to our students.

Ceremonies typically last 2-2.5 hours. More details about the ceremony can be found at Ceremonies.

Faculty Processional and Designated Section

All faculty are invited to participate in Commencement. Faculty gather 30 minutes prior to the ceremony in Tedrick Auditorium. From there, faculty will process into the ceremony and be seated in a designated faculty section, where they will be recognized during Commencement. The faculty sections are padded chair seats in the rows closest to the floor on either side, allowing faculty a front row spot to congratulate graduates and participate in the academic celebration.

Marshals

A limited number of faculty and staff are needed to serve as marshals for the Commencement ceremony. Marshals process in with the graduates, are seated on the floor with the graduates, and assist when graduates cross the stage to receive their degree. Marshal robes can be provided to faculty and staff who wish to serve as marshals but do not have regalia.

Regalia

Faculty participants (including marshals and hooding faculty) are required to wear appropriate academic regalia. University Events and Protocol, as well as some colleges/schools, have a limited amount of regalia available for faculty to borrow. Please contact your dean's office or email events@siu.edu if you wish to inquire about borrowing regalia.

Academic regalia may be rented or purchased through the University Bookstore in the Student Center or online through Herff Jones. Custom regalia purchases take about six weeks, so order by March 29, 2024 if you plan to wear your regalia for May Commencement. More information is available at Faculty Regalia Sale.

If you graduated from SIU Carbondale you are welcome to wear the custom regalia. Otherwise you may wear the regalia from your respective University or the standard black regalia. For more information please contact the University Bookstore at 618-536-3321.

Pickup for rented regalia will begin the week prior to commencement at the University Bookstore. Return will be at the bookstore after the event or at the Banterra Center the day of commencement. Loaner regalia should be returned to the office from which you borrowed it.

Processional

The academic processional will assemble 30 minutes prior to the ceremony, and will be led by the appropriate marshal. Below is a listing of places faculty will assemble prior to the processional. A map including these locations can be found here.

• Platform Party – Cook Club
• Doctoral Advisors – Doctoral graduates and hooding faculty line up on the first floor of Lingle Hall. Faculty hooding multiple graduates, should line up with the graduate who will be hooded first.
• General Faculty – Tedrick Auditorium
• Undergraduate Marshals - Banterra Center floor
• Graduate Marshals - Lingle Hall lower level
