Ordering Regalia (Cap and Gown)
Regalia is required of all graduates. The deadline to order your custom regalia is November 2. You may order your regalia from the University Bookstore in the Student Center or from Herff Jones directly at (https://colleges.herffjones.com/college/_siuc/). Graduates may pick up their custom regalia from the University Bookstore beginning December 10. University Bookstore will be open on Saturday, December 15.
Doctoral students must order hood and regalia; hood will be delivered to the Troutt-Witmann Center prior to graduation.
I am unable to pick up my cap and gown during the designated hours. Can someone pick it up for me?
Yes, as long as that student has your permission. Verification will be required.
We encourage you to return your regalia at the SIU Arena after your ceremony the day of commencement or it can be returned to the University Bookstore in the Student Center.
Students are welcome to wear honor, organization or other affiliation stoles, however, SIU stoles and cords should be displayed above all others.
Caps and Tassel Colors
All candidates participating in the commencement ceremony will wear a tassel on their mortarboard cap and the cap should be worn at all times, except during the National Anthem. The cap should be worn horizontal with the point directly in the center front and the tassel on the right for undergraduates and on the left for graduate candidates. No decorative materials may be worn on the gown or the cap. The Chancellor will indicate to the graduates when it is time to turn the tassel.
The color of the tassel indicates the college/school of the University granting the degree. The proper tassel colors are as follows:
- Agriculture – Maize
- Applied Sciences and Arts – Orange
- Business – Drab
- Education and Human Services – Light Blue
- Engineering – Orange
- Liberal Arts – White
- Mass Communication and Media Arts – Alice Blue
- Science – Gold
- Social Work – Citron Yellow
- Master’s – Black
- PhD – Gold
- Juris Doctorate – Purple
Personalized graduation announcements may be purchased online through Herff Jones (https://colleges.herffjones.com/college/siuc/). Announcements need to be ordered by TBD. The announcements will be shipped directly to your home address. They should be mailed to your guests at least two weeks in advance.
You will need to pick up your name card that will be used during the commencement when the reader announces your name and will be provided by the University Bookstore when you pick up your regalia. For your convenience, the SIU Arena Ticket Office will also be able to provide you your name card beginning Dec. 15. It is important to pick up these name cards prior to your commencement and bring them with you the day of commencement. Ph.D., MFA, and School of Law students will receive their reader/name card the day of the ceremony when they check-in at the Troutt-Wittmann Academic Center.
Grad Images will take individual photographs of graduates as they receive their scroll and as they leave the platform. The company will mail or email a complimentary color proof to you within a week, along with instructions to order additional prints. You may also check on your photographs at www.gradimages.com.
